Some relationships never expire… ❤️

6 min read

Yesterday, along with some of my school friends, I had the opportunity to visit our very beloved teacher, Todankar Sir, on the occasion of Ganesh Festival. It was also a special for the fact that Sir had recently moved to this new house. Sir was so happy to receive us and to our pleasant surprise, his family treated us with simple yet tasty dinner. Overall, we had a great time together.

As I returned home, i started dwelling on the the evening. For someone else, it may have been just a simple visit. But for me, it was much more than that. It was a beautiful journey back into nostalgia, memories and some of the happiest moments of my life.

It has been 35 years since we passed out of school, yet we are still in touch with Sir. Not just through reunions or occasional formal meetings, but intermittently, naturally, over all these years. Sir even attended my and my brother’s marriages. And that makes this relationship truly special.

In today's world, where many relationships—especially teacher-student relationships—seem to have an expiry date, I often wonder what kept this one so fresh even after 35 years.

For me, the answer is respect, empathy, honesty and gratitude.

When I was in 9th and 10th, my father’s company went on strike. We literally had no income for several months. Sir knew about our situation and simply refused to take a single rupee for my tuition throughout the entire 10th standard. Even after the strike was over, he refused to accept the fees, understanding what our family had gone through.

What touched me most was that he never made me feel that he was doing me a favor. There was no sympathy, no display of generosity. It was simply empathy. He treated me with the same love and respect as any other student.

I still remember how he and his wife took the trouble to visit our home just one day before my 10th standard exams to wish me good luck. Imagine what that must have meant to a young student going into one of the most important exams of his life. That small gesture gave me so much confidence and motivation. And yes, I went on to score very good marks. 😊

Sir was also a sincere and honest teacher. He was excellent in Maths and Science and had his own unique way of teaching. Sometimes, that style even became a subject of fun among some students. I never really liked them making fun of him and I would simply walk away. But despite everything, he was one of the most respected teachers in our school.

Over the years, our relationship went beyond teacher and student. We visited his home many times and developed a beautiful bond with his family too. His loving and caring wife and their two children never treated us like students. They treated us like family.

And then there is gratitude.

When I think about the people who have shaped my life, I always place Todankar Sir—and another wonderful teacher, Vanjari Madam—alongside my parents, when it comes to respect and value. Sir is one of those people whom I will always credit for whatever I am today.

And yesterday, I was fortunate to experience another beautiful part of this journey with some of my school friends—some of whom I have known since Montessori! Think about that… almost 45 years of friendship.

Whenever we meet, it doesn't take much time to go back to those school days. The conversations, the laughter, the memories… for a few hours, we are not who we are today. We are simply those school kids again. Perhaps that is why these moments mean so much to me. They are little oases in life.

For a few precious moments, they allow me to forget the hardships of the present and relive some of the happiest, purest moments of the past. 😊

So, thank you, Sir. Thank you for being much more than a teacher.

And thank you, my dear friends, for giving me these beautiful moments and memories.

They truly mean a lot to me. ❤️
