She Taught Us More Than Geography and Marathi

8 min read

(P.S. - Please scroll down for Marathi read)

Today, I felt like writing about another teacher who has had an everlasting impact on my life — Vanjari Madam.

I was first introduced to Vanjari Madam when I was in the 9th standard. She taught us Geography.

Until then, Geography was not exactly one of my favorite subjects. I studied it because I had to. But Madam had a way of teaching that slowly changed that. She was always so well prepared that I never once doubted her knowledge. She would often bring references and information from outside the textbook, which made us curious about the topic and encouraged us to learn beyond what was prescribed in the book.

Vanjari Madam was extremely soft-spoken. I don't remember her ever raising her voice, let alone punishing a student. At least, not to my knowledge.

That doesn't mean she never got angry or irritated with the class. She simply didn't need to. Her words, when she was disappointed, were sharp enough. You could feel the punishment in them. Her disappointment would show on her face, and somehow, that itself was enough to make us feel sad or guilty. No one wanted to intentionally trouble such a gentle teacher and, more importantly, such a wonderful human being.

Then came the 10th standard.

And to my greatest delight, Vanjari Madam was appointed as our class teacher. The cherry on the cake?

She was going to teach us both Geography and Marathi. Our experience with Marathi teachers until the 9th standard had been fairly average. Most of the time, teaching meant simply going through the textbook. Many times, we even saw teachers referring to Navneet guides.

But Madam changed all that for me. For the first time, I started loving Marathi as a subject. Until then, I would mostly memorize lessons and poems so that I could score marks in the examination. But the way Vanjari Madam taught Marathi was completely different.

She made me live the lessons and poems. The proof is , I still remember few of the poems byheart. :)

I sometimes wish I had preserved my 10th-standard Marathi textbook as a memoir. It was filled with notes, meanings and explanations that I had written down while Madam taught us.

She had once given us a very simple piece of advice: "Read the lesson at least once before it is taught in class.'’

It sounded simple, but it made a huge difference. When Madam actually taught the lesson or poem, I could understand the context better. It helped me confirm what I had understood — or realise where I had misunderstood something. It helped me clear my doubts. It also helped me answer questions in class and, honestly, occasionally impress Madam. :)

She would always give us additional information and references related to the lesson or poem. That helped tremendously when we had to write 'संदर्भासहित स्पष्टीकरण' answers.

Slowly, my respect for Madam grew multifold. She was knowledgeable, loving, soft-spoken and caring. She never hesitated to answer our questions or explain something again if we hadn't understood it. She seemed to have almost every quality one would look for in a good teacher.

But for me, there was one quality that stood above all others. She knew how to make students love the subject. And when a teacher achieves that, teaching and learning both become enjoyable.

Every now and then, Madam would also give us a few inspirational — and sometimes eye-opening — pieces of advice. They may have sounded like ordinary words at that age, but many of them stayed somewhere in my mind and resurfaced much later in life.

And then came the result. I scored 89 marks in Marathi. For me, that was a very good score in a language subject. And I know where a large part of the credit belongs -

To Vanjari Madam.

After we passed out of school, we made it a point to visit Madam on Guru Purnima and Teachers' Day. She had also visited my home to wish me after my marriage. But, as it happens with all of us, life became busy. We got caught up in our careers, families, responsibilities and the everyday rush of life. Madam also moved to a different house, and somehow, the years just kept passing.

After many years, we finally managed to visit her. I still remember how emotional I felt simply seeing her after so many years. The same thing happened a few years later when I met her again at our school reunion. I just couldn't hold back my tears. There was no reasoning behind it. No particular incident had triggered it. It was just emotion.

Perhaps some relationships don't need a reason. They simply occupy a special place in your heart.

Since then, we have at least remained connected over WhatsApp. But honestly, that is no excuse for not meeting her in person. Life keeps getting busy, and our plans to meet somehow never seem to materialise. But the gratitude remains.

As I wrote in my earlier blog about Todankar Sir, for me, Vanjari Madam and Todankar Sir hold a place next only to my parents in my heart. They have played a lion's share in shaping the person I am today. And when I look back at my life, I realise that some teachers don't simply teach subjects.

They teach you how to learn.

They make you curious.

They make you question.

They make you appreciate knowledge.

And sometimes, without even realising it, they influence the person you eventually become.

Today, I simply felt like putting my gratitude into words. Thank you, Vanjari Madam, for your love, affection, patience, knowledge and everything you taught us — both inside and outside the classroom.

Thank you for making me love Geography. Thank you for making me love Marathi. And, more importantly, thank you for making learning something to enjoy rather than something to simply complete.

Whatever I am today, and whatever I am proud of in myself, has been shaped by many people. You are certainly one of those people.

Thank you, Vanjari Madam.

May you always be blessed with a long, happy and healthy life. And may you always know that somewhere, one of your former students still remembers you with immense love, respect and gratitude. ❤️

Blessed is the one who respects his Guru. - 5
